Goupil leads PrairieThunder to fifth straight win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Alex Goupil continued his torrid offensive display by scoring two goals and adding two assists to lead the Bloomington PrairieThunder to a 6-4 United Hockey League victory over Flint and a franchise-best fifth straight triumph.

The win moved the PrairieThunder's record to 23-38-4 before 3,823 people at U.S. Cellular Coliseum and within six points of Chicago for the final playoff berth with 11 games remaining. The PrairieThunder plays Chicago on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.

Goupil, who has scored seven points in the last four games, scored his first goal with 12:44 remaining in the second period to draw the PrairieThunder even at 1-1. John Spoltore, who had three assists, and Mark Phenow added assists on the goal. Flint had taken a 1-0 lead with 13:57 remaining in the first period on a goal by Bobby Reynolds.

Flint regained the lead 28 seconds after Goupil's goal, 2-1 on Bogdan Rudenko's goal off assists from Tyson Turgeon and Mike Kinnie. Turgeon had two assists in the game. The PrairieThunder evened the score 2-2 on Jarad Bourassa's goal off an assist by Goupil with 3:15 left in the second period.

Flint retook the lead on a power play score by Jeff Zehr with 13:30 left in the third period before Goupil's second goal - a power play score - tied the game, 3-3. Tyler Rennette and Spoltore had the assists.

Mike Zbriger then gave the PrairieThunder a 4-3 lead with an unassisted goal with 9:55 left in the game. But Flint tied the game again on Gerald Miller's score with 6:18 to go. Rennette finally scored what proved to be the game-winner with 4:13 remaining on a power play off assists from Spoltore and Goupil. Brad Thompson added an empty-net goal off an assist from Rennette with 23 seconds remaining.

Bloomington goalie Kris Tebbs earned his fifth straight victory without a loss. He saved 14 of 18 shots, while Bloomington had 26 shots.
