Lee Goren scored a powerplay goal 2:25 into overtime to give the Manitoba Moose a 3-2 OT victory over the St. John's Maple Leafs to take a commanding 3-1 lead in their series.
Tonight's goaltenders remained the same as the past three games: Mikael Tellqvist for St. John's and Wade Flaherty for Manitoba.
St. John's came out on the attack right at the start, crashing the Moose net a minute-and-a-half in. The puck crossed the line but only after the whistle had gone. After the play, a minor altercation broke out between Wade Brookbank and Kris Newbury.
On the next shift, Flaherty had to be sharp making a glove stop on an Ian White blast.
The Moose went on their first powerplay five minutes into the opening frame and had a great chance to score late in the man advantage. Ryan Kesler's backhand attempt was turned away by a sprawling Tellqvist and Danny Groulx was unable to get the rebound up and over the Leafs netminder.
Several minutes later, the Moose created a three-on-two situation when Alexandre Burrows fired the puck off the boards to start an odd-man rush. Burrows rushed up ice with Nathan Smith and Jimmy Roy and fed Smith in the slot for the game's opening goal.
A turnover at the blueline with seven minutes to play in the first created a two-on-one with Lee Goren and Ryan Kesler. Kesler fed Goren, who had an open cage but shot the puck high.
St. John's came right back a minute later to tie the game. Clarke Wilm backhanded it in the slot low past Flaherty glove side to make it 1-1.
After one period, shots were 10-9 Manitoba with the game tied 1-1.
The Leafs had a great chance to go ahead in the opening seconds of the middle period. David Ling teed up a shot from the slot area that Flaherty turned away.
Still in the opening minute, Tellqvist stopped Alexandre Burrows on a rush.
St. John's almost went ahead at the two-minute mark when Flaherty came out to play the puck and collided with Kyle Wellwood. Matt Stajan attempted to put the puck in the vacant net but Flaherty was able to get back in time to smother the puck.
As the period progressed, both teams had great chances as play raced up and down the ice. Heerema almost scored on a backhand at the top of the crease for Manitoba while Brendan Bell rang a shot off the post for St. John's.
13 minutes in, Smith and Burrows had a pair of opportunities to put the Moose ahead. Tellqvist stopped Burrows on the initial shot and stretched his pad out to deny Smith on the rebound.
Just as the period was ending, Peter Sarno raced in on a breakaway. His shot was gloved down by the Leafs goaltender. After two, the game remained tied 1-1 although the Moose held a 27-15 shot advantage.
St. John's scored 16 seconds into the third period as Clarke Wilm netted his second goal of the game to make it 2-1.
Nine minutes into the period, the Moose were still looking for their first shot of the third. St. John's blasted six shots on Flaherty by that point.
Manitoba's first shot almost came at the 10:53 mark. Jeff Heerema danced around a Leafs defender but lost control of the puck before Tellqvist smothered it.
When the Moose did get their first two shots of the period, they made them count. Peter Sarno fed Nolan Baumgartner on a cross-ice pass. Baumgartner blasted it on net and Josh Green was right there to put the rebound in on the far side.
Tension mounted late in the third when David Ling received a roughing penalty to put the Moose on the powerplay.
Manitoba had numerous chances to put the game away with the man advantage but Tellqvist stood tall when called upon.
With 1:45 to play, Joel Kwiatkowski took a five-minute penalty for high sticking.
After regulation, shots were 37-22 for the Moose.
The Moose started overtime on the powerplay for three minutes.
Eventually, with time dwindling down in the man advantage, Peter Sarno found Goren open across the ice. He fed the Moose winger who one-timed it into the open cage to give Manitoba the win.
