Good Riddance, Saints End 1-6 Homestand with 9-2 Loss to Explorers

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints couldn't be happier to be leaving for the road. They finished a seven-game homestand 1-6 and it ended with a 9-2 loss to the Sioux City Explorers on Wednesday night in front of 8,065. The loss drops the Saints to 20-18 on the season.

The Explorers began their scoring onslaught in the second with a solo homer from Jose Sermo, his fourth of the season, making it 1-0.

The big inning came in the third when the Explorers sent 11 men to the plate and scored six runs. It started off with Saints pitcher Matt Solter striking out Dylan Kelly, but strike three got past catcher Justin O'Conner. He went to the backstop, got the ball and threw it to first, but it went over the head of Brady Shoemaker and into right field sending Kelly to second. Solter walked Daniel Jackson and Luis Durango reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Michael Lang roped a two-run double to right making it 3-0. A walk to Jay Austin loaded the bases with nobody out. Solter would get the next two hitters, but he walked back-to-back hitters forcing in two runs and making it 5-0. Kelly finished the scoring with a two-run single to left making it 7-0.

The Saints answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Richard Prigatano walked with two outs and scored on a triple from Max Murphy making it 7-1.

In the seventh, the Explorers tacked on two more as Austin led off with a walk and Nate Samson singled him to second. With one out, Solter hit Jay Baum to load the bases. Solter departed for reliever Jake Matthys. He gave up an RBI single to Dexter McCall and a sacrifice fly to Kelly making it 9-1. Solter went 6.1 innings allowing nine runs on nine hits while walking five and striking out four.

The Saints scored their final run in the eighth when Anthony Phillips doubled and Kes Carter triples him home.

Reliever Ken Frosch added to his consecutive scoreless streak by pitching a scoreless ninth. He hasn't given up a run all season, a span of 18.2 inninngs.

The Saints head to Shaw Park for a four-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The Saints send RHP Johns Straka (1-0, 3.60) to the mound while the Goldeyes are TBA. The game can be heard on Alt 93.3 FM.
