Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Justin Justice scored twice, Juan Diaz hit a monstrous home-run and Chris Salamida pitched seven strong innings, as the Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 4-3 on Monday night at U.S. Steel Yard.
The win is Winnipeg's fifth in its last six games.
The Fish opened the scoring in the second inning when a Dee Brown sac fly to right field scored Justice from third.
One inning later the Goldeyes right fielder scored again, this time off his own bat. Justice sent a solo shot over the wall off RailCats starter Nolan Nicholson in the fourth inning, which gave the Fish a two-run lead.
With this early lead, lefty Chris Salamida set his cruise control and finished the night allowing only one run on four hits, while striking out a season-high 10 batters.
Fresh off being named the Northern League Player of the Week, Juan Diaz capped off an impressive long weekend with another home run. His 18th dinger of the season was sent deep into the night sky and gave the Goldeyes what would turn out to be some much needed insurance.
Things got a scary for the Fish late in the game when Bobby Korecky was brought in for a chance at the save. The RailCats jumped on Korecky and scored two runs to cut the lead to one. With a runner on first the former Major Leaguer put a stop the 'Cats late rally. Korecky got Mike Rhode to strike out swinging to end the game and earn his eighth save of the year.
The Goldeyes are now two games above .500 and sit a game and half ahead of the RailCats for fourth in the Northern League standings. Game 2 goes tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. Listen live in on 1290 CFRW. The pre-game show starts at 5:30 p.m.
