Goldeyes Pound JackHammers

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA-The Winnipeg Goldeyes (45-26) smacked five home runs to earn a 17-5 win over the Joliet JackHammers (27-47) before 6,195 fans at Canwest Park on Thursday night.

The Goldeyes scored two runs in the 1st inning on a two-run home run by DH Juan Diaz (4-6). CF Cory Patton (3-4) led off the game against Joliet RHP Derek Barrows (2-3) by working a walk.

Diaz powered a pitch over the left field wall for his 22nd home run of the season in a 2-0 Goldeyes lead.

The JackHammers came within one run in the 2nd inning. 1B Freddie Thon (1-4) reached base on an error and moved to second base when DH Kyle Nichols (1-3) worked a walk. C Tug Gillingham (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Thon to cut the Winnipeg lead down to 2-1.

The Goldeyes pushed across two runs in the 2nd inning before scoring four runs in the 3rd inning. Entering the 3rd inning with a 4-1 lead, Diaz led off the frame by hitting his second home run of the game to make it 5-1 Winnipeg.

RF Kevin West (1-5) singled and 3B Brent Metheny (3-4) hit a two-run home run over the right field wall for a 7-1 Winnipeg advantage. The Goldeyes took an 8-1 lead after three innings.

The JackHammers came back to score four runs in the 5th inning against Winnipeg RHP Bear Bay (7-3). SS Kevin Rios (2-5) hit a double and went to third on a groundout by 3B Vince Harrison (0-3).

LF Brad Correll (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Rios and make the score 8-2.

RF Joe Gaetti (1-4) followed with a single to push Correll to second base. Thon laced an RBI double to score Correll and bring the JackHammers within five runs at 8-3.

A two-run single by DH Kyle Nichols (1-3) scored Gaetti and Thon and made it 8-5.

The Goldeyes scored six runs in the 5th inning to take a 14-5 lead. Metheny hit his second home run of the game to highlight the six-run inning.
