Schaumburg Flyers News Release
GARY, IN - Back-to-back home runs from Jeff Dunbar and Lyndon Poole in the ninth weren't nearly enough to overcome a 6-0 Gary advantage, as the Flyers fell 6-2 to the RailCats Thursday at the U.S. Steel Yard. The RailCats complete a four-game sweep with the win, and are now 10-0 against the Flyers at home this season.
Mike Rohde led off the second inning with a double off Flyers' starter Carmen Pignatiello, and Cristian Guerrero followed with a two-run homer to put the RailCats in front 2-0. Jeff Beachum then singled, and would eventually come home to score on a two-out, bases-loaded walk from Chris Carrara to make it 3-0.
Beachum and Brett Wallace knocked back-to-back singles to start the fourth for the RailCats, and a Rob Marconi double brought both of them home to expand the lead to 5-0. The final âCats run came in the fifth when Beachum drove home Jay Pecci who had led off with a double.
The Flyers managed just three hits through the first eight innings against RailCats starter Tony Cogan before the ninth inning home runs off Eddie de la Cruz.
Jeff Beachum recorded the first four-hit game of his career, going 4-4 with two runs and an RBI. No Flyer recorded more than one hit.
Pignatiello takes the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings of work to fall to 6-8. Cogan improves to 7-6 pitching eight innings of three-hit, shutout ball. He has now made three starts against the Flyers, going eight innings in each without allowing an earned run.
The Flyers will make the overnight trip across the border to take on the Goldeyes tomorrow night at 7:00. LHP Ryan Gehring makes his Flyers debut against LHP Ace Walker (9-3, 2.84).
