Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped the opener of a four-game series tonight, falling 5-0 to the Joliet JackHammers before 5,843 at Canwest Park. Despite the loss, Winnipeg still holds a four-game lead over Schaumburg in the standings.
Joliet opened the scoring off Ace Walker in the third. Adam Klein reached to lead it off on a Wes Long error and was sacrificed to second by Gary Harris. Kevin Rios put down a bunt that went straight along the third base line, putting men on the corners with one out. Phil Avlas followed with a sacrifice fly and it was 1-0. Freddie Thon singled to move Rios to second, from where he scored on a Tydus Meadows double.
Meadows was back for more in the sixth when he and Andrew Pinckney hit consecutive doubles. The visitors concluded the scoring in the ninth off Zach Baldwin when Pinckney and Wally Backman Jr. hit consecutive solo home runs.
Brad Mumma (4-2) was the winner, tossing almost-flawless baseball for six innings before leaving with an undetermined injury in the seventh. He allowed just five singles while fanning four and walking one. Walker (4-1) suffered his first loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits in eight innings, walking just one while striking out four.
