JOLIET-The Winnipeg Goldeyes (47-29) scored five runs on 13 hits to win 5-3 over the Joliet JackHammers (28-50) before 6,020 fans at Silver Cross Field on Tuesday night.

The Goldeyes scored a single run in the 1st inning against new JackHammers RHP Brandon Mathes (0-1). CF Cory Patton (1-4) worked a walk and moved to second base on a single by DH Juan Diaz (2-5).

RF Kevin West (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Patton for a 1-0 Winnipeg lead.

The JackHammers scored two runs in the 1st inning to take a 2-1 lead. CF Adam Klein (0-3) reached base on a catcher's interference and stole second base. SS Kevin Rios (0-3) worked a walk to push Klein to second base.

An RBI single by 3B Vince Harrison (1-4) scored Klein for a 1-1 tied score. RF Joe Gaetti (1-3) singled home Rios for a 2-1 Joliet advantage.

In the 2nd inning, Winnipeg utilized the long-ball to retake the lead. 1B Cody Ehlers (1-3) worked a walk and SS Adam Frost (3-4) singled. Patton followed with a three-run home run over the right field wall to take a 4-2 lead.

In the 8th inning, the Goldeyes tacked on an insurance run to lead 5-2. Frost smacked a one-out triple and scored on a single by C Jeff DeSmidt (1-3).

The JackHammers pushed across an unearned run in the 5th inning. C Christian Lopez (1-3) hit a one-out double and moved to third base on a groundout hit into by Klein. Rios reached base on an error to score Lopez and get the JackHammers within two runs at 5-3.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers signed Mathes to a contract before the game. The true rookie finished his senior season at Kansas Wesleyan and went 8-1 with a 1.38 ERA. He went four innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. Rookie RHP Trenton Lee also made his professional debut and pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the JackHammers.

Loose Gravel: The crowd of 6,020 was the 2nd largest crowd of the season. The JackHammers drew a crowd of 6,188 fans against Gary on May 20.

The JackHammers and Goldeyes finish their three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. The JackHammers will host the Farmers Insurance Salute to Our Troops complete with a special fireworks show after the game. It's also Winning Wednesday with a pre-game catch on the field before the game and Baseball Bingo. The Winnipeg Goldeyes send RHP Ace Walker (9-4, 3.09) to the mound against RHP Nate Sevier (1-2, 3.86) for the JackHammers.
