Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs News Release
After hitting seven home runs in three nights, the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs found themselves playing a game where neither they nor the Glens Falls Golden Eagles could not plate any runs. Both Mohawk Valley starter Ed Lewicki and his Glens Falls counterpart John Leiter pitched seven scoreless innings apiece before being pulled for relievers.
Unfortunately for the Diamond Dawgs (17-10), those same relievers could not finish the job, as Glens Falls scored all their runs in crunch time, defeating Mohawk Valley 5-2.
All seven runs scored tonight came in the last two innings, as a double by Mark Powell scored Golden Eagle newcomer Ryan Hooper in the eighth inning. The Diamond Dawgs came roaring back in their half of the inning, scoring Trey Stover and Colin Hawk on two doubles.
Glens Falls (12-17) broke the game wide open in the 9th, as JQ Folena hit a bases-clearing triple after William Quirke tied the game on a bases-loaded walk by Matt Pidich. All four runs scored by the Golden Eagles in the 9th were with two outs and a chance to close the door by Pidich.
Pidich would get the loss for Mohawk Valley, dropping his record to 0-2. Glens Falls' normal outfielder Matt Sturchio would pick up the win for the Golden Eagles, his first of the season. Tyler Ehlers would pick up the save for Glens Falls
With the loss, the Diamond Dawgs extend their slide to two games, while stopping the Golden Eagles' own streak at just one game.
Mohawk Valley will try to end their losing ways and hopefully provide a double dose of fireworks on Saturday as they face the Newark Pilots. The Diamond Dawgs lost to those same Pilots in Newark, 7-2 on Thursday. It is also fireworks night at Veteran's Memorial Park, as these fireworks were rained out on July 3.
Glens Falls will try to continue their winning ways Saturday as they face the division-leading Amsterdam Mohawks. The Mohawks split a doubleheader with the Albany Dutchmen on Friday.
