Goehring, Bombers Shut Down Chiefs
April 15, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Goaltender Karl Goehring stopped 40 shots en route to his fifth straight win to open the playoffs as the Dayton Bombers defeated the Johnstown Chiefs 3-1 Saturday night at Hara Arena to take a 2-0 series lead in "The Hara Revisited 'Old Time Hockey'" East Coast Hockey League Kelly Cup Northwest Division Final.
Goehring, who helped spearhead the Bombers to a three-game series sweep in the Northwest Division Semifinals against the Cincinnati Cyclones by allowing just two goals in three games, now leads the league with a 1.11 playoff goals-against average. Goehring stopped Johnstown defenseman Rob Sandrock and Philippe Roy seven times each. Eric Schneider ended Goehring's shutout bid with a goal 3:39 into the final period that pulled the Chiefs to within two goals (3-1).
Tom Nemeth's slap shot goal, set up by Cory Morgan and Brian Cummings, helped the Bombers to a 1-0 lead just 2:56 into the contest. A splendid individual effort led to defenseman Doug Nolan's goal 55 seconds later. He burst into the Chiefs' zone, took a slap shot, then followed up his own rebound to beat goalie Dany Sabourin. Ben Keup's third goal in as many playoff games, assisted by Ryan Vince and Preston Mizzi, lifted the Bombers to a 3-0 lead 3:51 into the second period.
The Bombers will hope to wrap up the Northwest Division Final series in Game Three this Thursday at the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown. Game time has been moved up to 7:30 p.m. (7:15 p.m. broadcast time on www.daytonbombers.com in association with www.sportsjuice.com). Tickets for all Bombers' home playoff games can be purchased by calling (937) 775-4747, logging onto www.daytonbombers.com, or by visiting the Nutter Center Box Office.
