Bloomington Thunder News Release
Waterloo, IA - A game that featured physical battles for both teams finished 5-2 in favor of the Waterloo Black Hawks over the Bloomington Thunder Saturday night. Bloomington continues on their road trip at 25-24-7 with four games remaining in the 2014-15 season.
Early chances by the Thunder were responded by the Black Hawks who fired 17 shots on net. On their first power play Phil Beaulieu (University of Nebraska-Omaha) scored from the point six seconds in to take the 1-0 lead. That lead would hold despite chances in front of Logan Halladay (University of Minnesota) who finished the period with 16 saves.
Blake Gober would open the second period with a goal to tie it at one. A 3-on-1 started by Mitchell Mattson (University of North Dakota) and Pat Curry was finished off by Gober, giving him goals in back-to-back games. Despite a few odd man rushes to take the lead, it was the Black Hawks taking the advantage on a loose puck. Alec McCrea (Cornell University) fired home his third of the season to make it 2-1.
Halladay continued to impress, making countless saves on rebounds in front including a four save sequence. However, Waterloo's power play struck again with their second goal of the game with just over a minute to play in the second. Ronnie Hein (Ferris State University) caught a one-timer from John Wiitala (Ohio State Univrsity) in the slot to make it 3-1 going into the break.
The third period became chippy but the Thunder were on the receiving end of almost every call in the period. Waterloo finished the game with seven power plays while Bloomington ended with just three.
Henrik Rommel scored the Black Hawks fourth goal of the game after killing off a five-minute power play. Bloomington wouldn't go down without a fight as Shane Bednard (Bowling Green State University) tipped a shot from Andrew Roye. On an ensuing 5-on-3 late in the period, Brock Boeser (University of North Dakota) netted his league leading 31st goal of the season.
Cale Morris picked up the win with 32 saves while Halladay suffers his first loss in four starts making 35 saves in the game.
The Thunder open their final two weekends of play in Chicago on Friday April 3rd facing their I-55 rivals from the north. The Steel and Thunder have not met since March 1st in a 3-2 win for the Thunder. Bloomington is 4-1-0 against the Steel this season.
