Goaltender Boron Returns To Thunder Crease
July 24, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, the proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers, has agreed to terms with goaltender Tim Boron (Bir-AWN), Thunder head coach Chris Cichocki announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Boron, 25, ranked tied for third in the ECHL with three shutouts last season, establishing a new Thunder season record in the process. The 6-foot, 177-pound netminder posted a record of 10-16-3, a save percentage of .909 and a 3.16 goals-against-average.
"What comes to my mind about Tim, first and foremost, is how great of a competitor he is," said Cichocki. "He showed that last year when he was put in a tough position to turn things around for us and he was a big factor in getting us into the playoffs - he was unbelievable and we're looking forward to having him back. He'll challenge, work right to the end and those are things you look for, as a coach, for a player to bring on a daily basis."
Boron was in net for all six games with the Thunder in last year's Kelly Cup Playoffs, tallying a .920 save percentage and recording three separate 40-save performances or higher. His 50-save shutout of Las Vegas on January 20 (1-0 win at Stockton Arena) set a new Thunder record for most saves in a shutout performance.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba native was claimed by the Thunder off waivers from the Charlotte Checkers on November 26, 2007 and in two seasons with the ECHL's Thunder, Las Vegas Wranglers and Central Hockey League's Colorado Eagles, Boron has tallied a 25-21-3 record, a goals-against-average of 3.02 and a save percentage of .910.
Boron posted a league-best three shutouts and 1.79 GAA in the 2007 CHL Playoffs, helping Colorado capture the CHL's President's Cup championship in 2006-07. He spent three years (2003-06) of his college hockey career at St. Cloud State University (NCAA), posting a lifetime 15-27-5 record, .897 save percentage and 3.05 goals-against-average with one shutout.
"Obviously, Stockton was a great place to play last season," said Boron. "There are so many positives with the town - they have great support, a great NHL affiliation, great facilities and I think a great program is being put in place next season for a run at a championship. I want to be a part of it and make a difference."
Boron is the fourth player with experience in a Thunder uniform to agree to terms for next season, joining defenseman Mark Adamek and left wingers Mike Lalonde and Tom Zanoski.
