Gladiators' Dominick Goodman Grabs Two League Honors
July 24, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Cleveland Gladiators News Release
CLEVELAND - Gladiators wide receiver Dominick Goodman's game-winning Hail Mary catch off the net last Saturday night has been named the Cutter's Catch of the Week and the Spalding Highlight of the Week, the Arena Football League announced today. The catch happened as time expired, giving the Gladiators a 60-54 win over the Chicago Rush in the 2012 season finale at Quicken Loans Arena.
With 0.8 seconds left in the game and the score tied at 54, Gladiators head coach Steve Thonn called "50-Net" - a designed play to give the receiver a chance to catch the ball off the rebound net for the score. Backup quarterback Matt Bassuener heaved the ball 30-yards downfield, and Goodman, who was tangled up with defenders, reached out and tipped the ball to himself as he fell to the ground.
"I thought about basketball, and tried to get myself in position," Goodman said after the game.
The grab was Goodman's 170th of the season and 34th touchdown of 2012. His 170 catches set a new franchise single-season record and ranked second in the AFL this season, only behind Iowa Barnstormer Jesse Schmidt's 172 catches in 18 games.
"We tried to get Robert Redd down there first," Thonn said. "Goodie ended up in the area and was able to come away with the ball. It was a great play."
