October 13, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
DULUTH, Ga. - The Gladiators impressed in their final tune-up before kicking off the 2013-14 season Sunday night, beating the Greenville Road Warriors 4-1 at the Duluth Ice Forum. The same two teams open the regular season on Friday October 18th at 7:05 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Defenseman Martin Lefebvre started the scoring 5:12 into the first period, hammering home a backdoor feed from forward Dirk Southern. Philippe Halley had the second assist, and the Gladiators kept the pressure up.
15:12 into the same period, Coyotes forward prospect Josh Currie scored his first tally of the night, sliding a wrister through the legs of Warriors goalie Jeff Malcolm on a close-in chance with Joey Haddad and Kirill Tuluov assisting on the power play.
Currie wasn't finished. 7:46 into the second period he blasted a shot from the high slot past Malcolm to extend Gwinnett's lead to 3-0. The power-play goal was assisted by Southern and Lefebvre.
Greenville scored its lone goal of the night late in the second, as Sean Berkstresser beat Gladiators goaltender Louis Domingue on a wraparound. That was as close as the Road Warriors would get though, as Halley capped the scoring at 14:56 of the third, lifting a point blank shot over Malcolm on the far side of the net. Southern picked up his third assist setting up the play, with Jeremie Malouin getting the other helper.
Domingue stopped 19 of 20 shots for Gwinnett and was sharp through most of the night, while Malcolm allowed all four goals on 20 shots. Gwinnett finished the preseason with a 1-1 record, after dropping a 3-1 decision Friday night in South Carolina.
The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the nation's premier "AA" hockey league and are affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. All home games are played at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
Atlanta's only professional hockey franchise opens their 11th season on October 18th against division rival Greenville. For all the latest team news, contests, and more visit GwinnettGladiators.com, or "like" the Gladiators on Facebook, and follow the team on Twitter.
