Gillis Named CHL Goaltender of the Week

January 10, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release

EVANSVILLE, IN.--- Completing the first week of the new calendar year 2012 undefeated in four games certainly has its rewards. For a second consecutive day this week, the Evansville IceMen have assumed the position on the Central Hockey League's center stage with yet another weekly league-wide honor.

On this date, the Central Hockey League, in concert with the IceMen organization, has announced that BRYAN GILLIS has been hailed as OAKLEY / CHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK for the week of January 2nd through January 8th. The IceMen first-year goalkeeper joins teammate Todd Robinson in the completion of an Evansville complete sweep of the league's weekly prestigious plaudits. On Monday, Robinson was honored as CHL Player of the Week.

GILLIS, 23, is enjoying an outstanding rookie campaign in the professional ranks following a standout Canadian Collegiate career in the Maritime Provinces of Canada. In his team's 4-game unblemished skein for the first week of the New Year, the Halifax, Nova Scotia product was masterful.

For the week, the 6-0, 170lb human puck detour posted an impeccable 3(3-0-0) record, grudgingly surrendering a menial 5-GA for a GAA of 1.67 while barricading 78 of 83-SOG for a SPCT of a sparkling .940.

He launched the week in rather auspicious fashion, earning the game's #2 Star in brushing aside 26-shots in an IceMen convincing 5-2 conquest of red hot Quad City. Gillis promptly proceeded to add 6-2 and 4-1 triumphs to his week's workload on Friday and Sunday respectively over the Bloomington Blaze.

For the season, Gillis has been dynamic as reflected in his overall record of 14(10-3-1) and impressive 6(5-1-0) mark on the road. The first-year backbone backstop has also been in goal for all three of Evansville's OT triumphs thus far this season. Gillis becomes the first IceMen goaltender to capture this coveted weekly award in 2011-12.

As for ROBINSON, having been named Oakley/CHL Player of the Week for the second time this season, the accolades and kudos continue for "Tape-to-Tape Todd." Earlier today, the IceMen centerman was named Alternate Captain for the CHL All-Stars Team which will clash with the host Arizona Sun Dogs Wednesday night in the league's annual mid-season classic. Matt Gens is also representing Evansville.
