PISCATAWAY - Conor Gill scored with 8:08 to play in overtime to give the visiting Washington Bayhawks an 11-10 win in the New Jersey Pride 2007 season opener in front of 2,151 fans at Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University.
The Bayhawks were given the opportunity to score in overtime thanks only to an outstanding save by Bud Light Game MVP Chris Garrity, who made a sprawling kick save on Adam Doneger on the Pride's previous trip down the fiels.
The Bayhawks then drew a holding penalty on Pride captain Jesse Hubbard in transition, allowing them to go man up. Just as the penalty expired, Gill beat New Jersey netminder Rob Scherr on the near side for the game winner.
"That was a great save by Garrity,'' said Pride head coach Peter Jacobs. "He should be commended for his effort.''
The loss overshadowed a nice comeback by New Jersey which trailed 10-6 with 5:55 left. Goals by Conor Ford, Kyle Harrison and Hubbard pulled the team to within a goal, all before Doneger ripped a shot that was out near the 2-point line for the game-tie-er.
Garrity ended with 14 saves, none bigger than his kicker in the extra frame. The Pride were led by Liam Banks, Ford and Harrison, each of whom scored a pair of goals. Doneger, Hubbard, Kevin Boland and Scott Urick added single tallies.
