FORT MYERS, FL (May 3, 2010) - The Florida State League announced today that Fort Myers Miracle pitcher Kyle Gibson has been named Pitcher of the Week for April 26 - May 2, 2010.
The 22-year old Greenfield, Indiana native spun a gem in his only outing of the week. The Minnesota Twins' 2009 first-round draft pick (22nd overall) from the University of Missouri, threw a complete game one-hitter in a 2-0 victory on Thursday, April 29 at Jupiter.
He allowed only an infield hit, throwing a total of 91 pitches, facing the minimum 27 batters over nine innings. The right-hander walked a batter, hit a batter, but both were erased by double plays and struck out six batters.
"This is a nice honor, but that game was an all-around team effort. It was a good game where things fell right for me," Gibson said.
Gibson is 2-1 with a 1.76 ERA. In his last four starts, he is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA with five walks and 22 strikeouts in 27 innings. His next start is tomorrow night against Jupiter at Hammond Stadium.
The Player of the week was Clearwater Threshers Infielder Cody Overbeck who collected 8 hits in 23 plate appearances for a .348 batting average. His hits included four homeruns and two doubles. He scored five times and had seven RBI's. His on base percentage was .400 and his slugging average was .957. This is his third year of professional baseball and he resides in Atoka, TN.
