(Duluth, MN) Duluth-Superior Dukes outfielder, Derrick Gibson, has been named Daktronics Northern League Player of the Week for July 8 through July 14. The slugger hit .526 with 2 doubles and 2 homeruns during the week.

Gibson, 27, joined the Dukes on June 19th after a five-month tryout as a linebacker with the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League. Since joining the team, Gibson has been plagued by injuries that have limited his amount of at-bats.

After resting for a little over a week, Gibson tore up Northern League pitching with his bat. Along with his 2 HR, he also had 1 stolen base, 4 RBI and struck out only once. He is currently on a five-game hitting streak.

The Winter Haven, Florida native was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 13th round of the 1993 draft. After hitting .310 in AAA during the 1997 and 1998 seasons, Gibson received the call to major leagues, where he hit .429 in 7 games with the Rockies.

Gibson saw action in the big leagues twice more in 1999. During a May game against the Arizona Diamondbacks and eventual Cy Young award winner, Randy Johnson, Gibson went 1 for 3. He ended the season with a .179 batting average and 2 HR (both hit in the same game) in 10 games.

The slugger has 149 career homeruns and 617 RBI. He is the first Dukes player to receive Player of the Week honors since RHP Klae Calvert claimed the prize twice last season.

The Dukes are on a 6-game winning streak and have won 11 of their past 14 games. The team is off today, but begin a four-game stand in Joliet, IL against the JackHammers tomorrow evening.

The Dukes return home on Saturday at 7:05 pm for a three-game series against Northern League Central North division rival Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
