San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants saw their five-game winning streak come to an end Monday night with a 4-2 loss to the Inland Empire 66ers at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Inland Empire starting pitcher Mario Alvarez didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning to record the win. The loss, San Jose's first of the Second Half (4-1), dropped their overall record to 43-32.
The Giants managed just three hits with both of their runs coming in the seventh inning. Trailing 3-0, Pablo Sandoval recorded San Jose's first hit of the contest - a one-out single into left center field. Anthony Contreras followed with a double to deep right center field plating Sandoval to make the score 3-1.
An Alvarez wild pitch advanced Contreras to third base before Mike Mooney delivered a sacrifice fly bringing the Giants to within one run.
Paul Oseguera (5-3) suffered the loss on the mound after surrendering three runs (all earned) on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Oseguera, who was making his first appearance in ten days, walked one and didn't strikeout a batter.
Inland Empire jumped in front with a single run in the bottom of the first inning against Oseguera. Bridger Hunt led off the frame with a triple down the right field line and scored two batters later on Blake DeWitt's ground out.
The score remained 1-0 until the 66ers pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ivan DeJesus led off by drawing a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Russell Mitchell's one-out double. Mitchell later scored on Jamie Hoffmann's sacrifice fly.
Leading 3-2, Inland Empire added an insurance run against relief pitcher Anthony Moreno in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Hoffmann doubled and advanced to third on a Moreno wild pitch. Luke May followed with a ground ball to Brian Bocock and reached base safely when the shortstop uncorked a wild throw to first. The miscue allowed Hoffmann to score from third base.
Alvarez (2-4) walked three and struck out four during his 6 2/3 innings on the hill. Cory Wade notched his sixth save of the year with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief work. Wade surrendered just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts.
Will Thompson led off the top of the eighth with a single, but Wade settled down to retire the next three hitters to end the inning. In the ninth, Wade needed just five pitches in a 1-2-3 frame.
Notes: Oseguera walked a batter for the first time in 29 1/3 innings ... The streak dated back to his May 31 start versus Bakersfield ... Inland Empire out-hit San Jose by an 8-3 margin ... Moreno (1 1/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) hadn't appeared in a game since May 3 ... He was activated from the Disabled List last Friday (strained oblique) ... The Giants fell one victory shy of matching their longest winning streak of the year (six games - April 5-10, April 17-22) ... Brad Boyer (flu) was placed on the Disabled List - retroactive to June 20 ... Pitcher Wayne Foltin was activated from the Disabled List before Monday's game.
On Deck: The Giants and 66ers continue this four-game series Tuesday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Park with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 P.M. Joe Martinez (6-5, 3.34 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Inland Empire is expected to counter with Jesus Castillo (2-5, 4.21 ERA).
