MODESTO - The San Jose Giants saw their season come to an end with a 2-0 loss to the Modesto Nuts in the decisive Game Three of the North Mini-Series on Friday evening at John Thurman Field. Three Nuts pitchers combined on a five-hitter as Modesto won the best-of-three series two-games-to-one.

Nuts starting pitcher Tyler Matzek worked 7 1/3 scoreless innings with just five hits allowed to pick-up the win. Matzek issued only one walk and struck out five during his stint on the mound. Isaiah Froneberger (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) and Adam Jorgenson (1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) then completed the shutout with a combined 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief. The Giants did not have a runner advance to third base for the entire game.

Modesto plated a single run in the bottom of the first inning against San Jose starter Taylor Rogers to take an early 1-0 lead. With one out, Rafael Ortega singled before Brett Tanos flied out. Ortega then stole second and scored when the next batter, Jared Clark, lined a single to left.

The Nuts extended their lead to 2-0 with another run in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back singles from Dallas Tarleton and Tim Smalling started the frame before Juan Crousset struck out swinging. Joey Wong then lined a single into right center plating Tarleton with the second Modesto run of the contest.

Matzek breezed through the first three innings as the left-hander faced the minimum nine batters. Carter Jurica singled with one out in the top of the first, but Joe Panik followed by grounding into an inning-ending double play. Matzek then worked 1-2-3 second and third innings.

In the top of the fourth, Panik singled with two outs, but Adam Duvall grounded out to end the inning. Matzek then pitched around a one-out single from Ricky Oropesa in the top of the fifth.

Trailing 2-0, the Giants threatened in the top of the sixth. Skyler Stromsmoe led off with a line drive single to left before Panik singled with two outs to put runners on first and second. Duvall was up next as the potential go-ahead run, however he flied out to center for the third out. It marked San Jose's only at-bat of the game with a runner in scoring position.

In the top of the seventh, the Giants were retired in order. Matzek finished the inning with consecutive strikeouts of Oropesa and Alex Burg.

Matzek returned to the mound in the eighth and issued a leadoff walk to Jarrett Parker. After Stromsmoe flied out to left, Froneberger was summoned from the bullpen and the Nuts reliever quickly got out of the inning by inducing the next batter, Shawn Payne, to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.

San Jose then went down quietly in the top of the ninth to end the season. Jurica and Panik were retired on back-to-back groundouts by Froneberger before Jorgenson entered the contest and set down Duvall on a shallow fly out to right.

Rogers was saddled with the loss for the Giants after yielding two runs (both earned) on six hits over five innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Josh Osich (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO), Phil McCormick (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Drew Bowlin (2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) combined for three scoreless innings out of the San Jose bullpen. The Nuts did not record a hit after the fourth inning. Modesto though still out-hit the Giants in the game by a 6-5 margin.

Panik (2-for-4) was the only San Jose player to finish with more than one hit.

The Nuts advance to play the Bakersfield Blaze in the best-of-five North Division Series beginning on Saturday.

The Giants will open the 2013 regular season on Thursday, April 4 at Visalia. San Jose's home opener at Municipal Stadium is scheduled for Thursday, April 11 against the Visalia Rawhide.
