Giants Rout Visalia in Second Half Opener

VISALIA - Joe Panik and Chris Lofton each homered as part of three-hit nights at the plate to lead the San Jose Giants to an 11-1 blowout win over the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday evening at Recreation Park. In the second half opener for both clubs, Jarrett Parker also homered as San Jose pounded out 16 hits en route to the victory. The Giants (39-32) have now won five out of their last six games.

Panik (3-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) hit a key two-out, two-run homer in the top of the fifth before Lofton (3-for-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) connected for a three-run home run with two outs the next inning. Luke Anders (3- for-5, 2 RBI) also finished with three hits.

Taylor Rogers (4-6) won his second consecutive start after limiting the Rawhide to a single run on five hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out three.

The game was scoreless until San Jose plated a run in the top of the third inning against Visalia starting pitcher Ray Hernandez. Bobby Haney led off with a double to deep left center and took third on the play when center fielder Keon Broxton mishandled the ball for an error. Two batters, Haney scored when Ryan Lollis hit a sacrifice fly to right.

The Giants added a run in the top of the fourth as Ricky Oropesa blasted a double into the right center field gap before scoring when the next batter, Andrew Susac, blooped a double down the right field line.

In the fifth, Lofton singled, moved to second on a passed ball and then Panik stepped to the plate with two outs and launched a home run to deep right. Panik's third home run of the season extended the San Jose lead to 4-0.

The Giants kept the pressure on with four more runs in the sixth inning. After the first two batters of the frame were retired, Parker crushed a home run to right to make it 5-0. Consecutive singles from Anders and Haney then put runners on first and second before Lofton homered to left center for an 8-0 advantage.

Rogers began his outing with five scoreless innings as the right- hander pitched around four singles and a walk. Rogers induced double plays in the first and third innings. Visalia scored their only run of the night in the bottom of the sixth when Mike Freeman hit a solo homer to right.

San Jose scored in their fifth straight inning with two runs in the top of the seventh. Panik started the inning with a single before Oropesa doubled off the wall in right to put runners on second and third with one out. With two outs, Parker drew a walk to load the bases then Anders blooped a single into shallow right center to score both Panik and Oropesa.

The Giants extended their lead to 11-1 in the eighth inning when Lofton led off with a double and scored when Panik singled up the middle.

Stephen Harrold (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO), Mitchell Beacom (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) and Drew Bowlin (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) each tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen for San Jose to seal the victory. The trio of relievers combined for six strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

Hernandez (5-4) suffered the loss for the Rawhide after yielding eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Notes: The Giants out-hit Visalia by a 16-7 margin ... Eight San Jose starters recorded at least one hit ... Oropesa (2-for-5, 2 2B) and Haney (2-for-5, 2B) also had multi-hit games ... Nine of the 16 Giants hits went for extra-bases (six doubles and three home runs) ... Panik extended his hitting streak to 10 games ... Parker (1-for-4, HR, RBI) was activated off the disabled list before the game ... Pitcher Hector Correa was also activated off the DL on Thursday ... Pitcher Danny Sandbrink and outfielder Devin Harris were placed on the disabled list ... San Jose improved to 4-9 against the Rawhide this season.

On Deck: The Giants and Rawhide continue their four-game series on Friday evening with first pitch at Recreation Park scheduled for 7:00 PM. Jack Snodgrass (6-2, 3.50 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Visalia is expected to counter with Taylor Siemens (0-1, 2.45 ERA).
