Giants Netminder Mirwald Named WHL Goaltender of the Week
December 18, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Vancouver Giants News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Vancouver Giants goaltender Brett Mirwald has been named WHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending December 17, 2023.
The 20-year-old went 2-0-0-0 in two starts, both against the Seattle Thunderbirds, putting up a near-perfect .98 goals against average and .965 save percentage.
Mirwald started the week with a gutsy 31-save performance against the coastal rivals, allowing only one goal and earning first star in a 2-1 overtime victory.
He continued his dominance in Vancouver's final game before the break on Sunday, when he turned aside 24 of 25 shots, including dangerous chances from NHL draft picks like Jeremy Hanzel and Gracyn Sawchyn. He'd be named third star for his efforts.
The Saskatoon, Sask. Product is 11-13-1-0 in his first season as the Giants' starter, sporting a 3.31 goals-against average and .907 save percentage, playing the second-most minutes of any goaltender (1541), facing the second-most shots (914) and recording the second-most saves (829). He has already played more minutes this season than all of last season (1447).
Mirwald was acquired from the Giants in June of 2022 from the Moose Jaw Warriors for a conditional sixth round pick. He was originally selected by the Warriors in the seventh round, 154th overall at the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft and was previously named a Second Team All-Star for the 2018-19 season in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA League.
The Giants (13-18-2-0) are fourth in the B.C. Division and return to post-holiday action on December 27 with a home game against the division rival Victoria Royals.
