San Jose Giants News Release

The San Jose Giants lost a narrow 7-6 decision to the Stockton Ports on Tuesday night in front of 2,912 fans at Banner Island Ballpark. In the losing effort, Giants right fielder Nate Schierholtz blasted two home runs and finished with three RBI. Schierholtz has now connected for three home runs in the series.

Schierholtz's first home run - a two-run blast in the top of the second inning - put the Giants in front by a 2-1 score. But the Ports would answer back against San Jose starting pitcher Garrett Broshuis with single tallies in the second and fourth frames. Broshuis was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs on eight hits in his four innings of work. The right-hander walked one and struck out two as his season record evened at 7-7.

Stockton added three more runs against relief pitcher Jeff Petersen in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 6-2. The damaging blow was a two-run triple off the bat of Kurt Suzuki into the right center field gap.

San Jose though would mount a comeback as a Schierholtz solo home run in the sixth inning brought the deficit down to three. Then in the seventh inning, consecutive singles from Clay Timpner and Jake Wald started a rally. Timpner would eventually score on a Todd Jennings RBI fielder's choice before Wald came across on a Brian Buscher sacrifice fly. Schierholtz though would ground out to end the inning stranding the tying run at third base.

After Stockton pushed their lead back to two runs with a single score in the bottom of the seventh, the Giants offense went back to work in the top of the eighth. Guillermo Rodriguez got things started with a single, moved to second on a ground out and then scored on a Wald clutch two-out double down the right field line. But Wald, representing the tying run, was stranded at second base when Derin McMains struck out swinging to end the threat.

Stockton closer Jared Burton set down the Giants 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth inning to seal the victory for the Ports.

In addition to Schierholtz, Timpner (2-for-5), Wald (2-for-4, 2B, RBI), and Rodriguez (2-for-3) had multi-hit games at the plate. Buscher, who replaced Kevin Frandsen on the active roster, came off the bench and finished 0-for-1 with a sacrifice fly.
