San Jose Giants News Release

The Giants erupted offensively Sunday night in Stockton blasting six home runs on their way to a 15-1 blowout victory over the Ports. Courtney Hawkins matched a San Jose Giants team record with three homers while Shane Matheny also went deep twice, including the club's first grand slam of the year. The win was the Giants' third straight over the Ports to open the series and fourth victory in a row overall. San Jose maintained their 1/2 game lead over Modesto in the North Division wild card race with eight to play in the regular season.

The Giants wasted no time jumping on Ports All-Star starting pitcher Brady Feigl taking a 2-0 lead two batters into the game. Sandro Fabian was hit by a pitch to start the game and had to leave due to injury. Rincones then stepped to the plate and crushed the first pitch of his at-bat over the fence in deep left center for a two-run homer. The home run was Rincones' first in the California League.

The Giants then broke the game open with a five-run top of the second. Kyle McPherson worked a leadoff walk before Shane Matheny singled. Rincones then ripped a single into left center plating McPherson to extend the lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Hawkins came up and launched a three-run home run to straightaway center. The blast, Hawkins' team-leading 15th round-tripper of the year, made it a 6-0 game. The rally then continued as Heath Quinn tripled off the wall in center and later scored on a Dalton Combs two-out single.

Stockton's only run of the night came in the bottom of the second before San Jose went right back to work in the third. With one out, Matheny belted a towering solo home run down the right field line for an 8-1 cushion. An inning later, Matheny left the yard again. Combs started the fourth-inning rally by drawing a walk before Hamlet Marte singled. McPherson then reached on a fielding error committed at third to load the bases. Matheny was up next and he hammered the first pitch of his at-bat over the wall in right center for a grand slam. Matheny's second home run of the contest pushed the lead to 12-1.

Hawkins' second home run - a solo shot on a soaring fly ball down the left field line - made it 13-1 in the fifth. In the seventh, David Villar led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored when Hawkins lined a single into left.

Hawkins then put his name into the San Jose Giants record book with another home run in the top of the ninth. With Stockton utility man Nico Giarrantano on the mound in mop-up duty, Hawkins connected for a tape-measure solo home run to left center. It was his fifth hit and third long ball of the night to make it 15-1.
