Georgia Force News Release
ATLANTA, GA - The Georgia Force (14-2, 1-1) came up short against the Columbus Destroyers (7-9, 3-0) 66-56 at Philips Arena. Georgia trailed by as many as 21 points, but fought back to take a 49-48 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter. In the end, a defensive stop by Columbus midway through the fourth quarter proved to be the difference.
Defense was a staple of the first quarter as the two teams were knotted at seven after the first fifteen minutes. Each quarterback threw interceptions in their first possessions and the Destroyers recorded a defensive stop the next time on the field. Columbus put the first points on the board with a seven-yard touchdown pass from QB Matt Nagy to WR Cole Magner. Georgia was on the cusp of scoring on their next possession, but WR Brent Holmes fumbled at the goal line and Destroyers DB B.J. Barre recovered. The Force defense produced a stop and QB Chris Greisen connected with WR Chris Jackson for a touchdown to capitalize.
Columbus outscored Georgia, 28-14, in the second quarter, giving them a 41-21 lead at the end of the first half. Destroyers DB Jerald Brown intercepted Greisen in the back of the endzone and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown to highlight the quarter.
Georgia battled back in the third quarter and only trailed by six heading into the final quarter, 48-42. Jackson added two scores in the quarter to give him five on the night and Greisen only threw one incomplete pass in the quarter to lead the comeback.
The Force offense opened the fourth quarter with a defensive stop and a four-yard touchdown pass from Greisen to WR Derek Lee. The touchdown gave Georgia their first lead of the game, 49-48. After trading scores, the Columbus defense created another stop and scored on a 24-yard pass from Nagy to WR Damien Groce later in the drive. Georgia was unable to rebound as they came up short 66-56 in the final quarter.
