LOS ANGELES, CA - The Georgia Force (9-2) fought hard to the final horn sounded, but found themselves at the short end of a 57-51 score as the Los Angeles Avengers won their sixth game of the season (6-5). With a late surge Georgia QB Chris Greisen threw for 371 yards on 32 of 44 passing with six touchdowns in the Force's second loss of the season.
The first quarter ended with the Force and the Avengers knotted 6-6. Georgia managed to score the first points of the game with an eight-yard pass from Greisen to Jackson. Jackson's touchdown catch was his second reception of the drive and the 800th of his career. The reception makes him only the fourth player in AFL history to post 10,000 receiving yards, 800 receptions and 250 touchdowns in a career. Los Angeles was able to answer two plays later when QB Sunny Cumbie threw down field to rookie WR LaShaun Ward for a 43-yard score. The Avengers defense produced the first defensive stop of the game when Georgia failed to convert on a fourth down opportunity late in the first quarter.
Georgia and Los Angeles finished the highly contested first half tied at 23. The Force passing attack was able to strike quickly on their two touchdowns of the quarter, with a 36-yard strike to WR Troy Bergeron and a 45-yard catch and run by WR Derek Lee. Cumbie connected with Ward for the second time in the game and FB Lonnie Ford rushed for a three-yard touchdown for the Avengers' touchdowns. Each kicker connected on a field goal in the quarter, with Georgia's K Carlos Martinez hitting a 31-yarder as the half expired.
The Avengers held a 36-30 lead heading into the final quarter of play. Cumbie added two touchdown passes in the quarter to bring his total to four on the night. Georgia's lone score of the quarter came on a two-yard pass from Greisen to Jackson. Los Angeles' defense created another defensive stop at the end of the third quarter to secure their six-point lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Los Angeles was able to create two defensive stops in the final quarter and hold on to a 57-51 win. Georgia worked hard to pull within seven in the final minute by stopping the Avengers offense and recovering an onside kick.
