Generals Sweep Dramatic Double-Header
April 24, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Jackson Generals News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - Some days you just can't make up. After a dominant front-end performance by left-hander Alex Young in the first game of Monday's double-header, the Jackson Generals (15-2) rallied for their ninth win in a row with an unlikely walkoff victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts (9-9) in the nightcap. The pair of wins gave Shelley Duncan's squad their fourth series victory in 2018.
GAME 1: Alex Young comes up four outs short on a bid for a no-hitter
Coming off his toughest start of the year-eight hits, two walks, and four earned runs in five innings against Birmingham-Alex Young (3-0, 3.43 ERA) hiccupped out of the gate with a walk to Chattanooga leadoff hitter LaMonte Wade. When Wade tried to score from second base on an infield groundout while the Generals weren't paying full attention, it was Young who caught the throw from first baseman Marty Herum and tagged Wade out at the plate to preserve the scoreless tie. With the first frame clear, Young proceeded to hurdle the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings with remarkable efficiency, entering the sixth inning with just 56 pitches expended, no hits allowed and a 6-0 lead. Young got a comebacker and a flyout to left field to put him four outs away from history, and then Wade, the scourge of the twin-bill, stroked a clean single through the right side of the infield to kill the no-hit bid.
Young's afternoon finished with a strikeout of Brent Rooker (one hitter later, just behind Wade) to end the sixth inning. He allowed just one hit and one free pass along the way. Jamie Westbrook, Ben DeLuzio, and Alberto Rosario were the drivers of the offense, with Westbrook's early two-run dinger helping stoke more than a few fires. Yoan Lopez also dealt a frame in relief.
FINAL: JXN 7, CHA 0
GAME 2: Offensive heroics help Generals bullpen out of a jam
After Taylor Widener gives up a lead-off home run to LaMonte Wade, the right-hander knuckles down, retiring the next ten hitters in the order. With nine strikeouts, Widener gives way to Gabe Speier, who in turn leaves it up to Michael Dimock (3-0, 2.08 ERA). Dimock allows both runners he inherits to score, giving the Lookouts the 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth. With one at-bat left, Jackson makes Chattanooga pay, as three consecutive hits from Kevin Medrano, Jamie Westbrook, and Marty Herum put the Generals over the top with a 7-6 win.
At the bat rack, the West Tennessee squad got two hits each from Galli Cribbs, Jose Vinicio, and Jamie Westbrook. Ben DeLuzio stole a trio of bases, and Cribbs whipped a two-strike RBI triple into right field to score the tying run when the Generals were trailing. The walk-off victory marked Jackson's third of the year and ninth in a row.
FINAL: JXN 7, CHA 6
