Generals Hold Off Stampede To Win 56-50

EL PASO, TX. : The El Paso Generals defeated the San Angelo Stampede Express on Saturday, June 6 from the El Paso County Coliseum to improve to 7-2 overall this season. El Paso got off to a roaring start as Generals DB Travis Johnson intercepted Express QB Sonny Cumbie on the first drive of the game. El Paso's offense took advantage of the turnover after Tommy Jones hooked up with WR DeAngelo Woodie for a 45-yard touchdown pass giving El Paso the early lead. Following another stop from the Generals defense, Jones led the offense down the field and capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run making it 14-0, El Paso. San Angelo countered with their first score after Sonny Cumbie found Kaylon Price for a 42-yard touchdown pass cutting the lead to 14-6.

Trailing 21-6 at the start of the second quarter, San Angelo began an impressive comeback as Sonny Cumbie threw for two touchdowns and the Express added a field goal. San Angelo outscored El Paso 17-13 in the quarter but El Paso held a halftime lead at 34-23.

San Angelo's defense stepped up in the beginning of the second half when Tommy Jones could not connect with Lemans Caismier on a fourth down situation. San Angelo could not convert the turnover on downs to points and El Paso was able to put up a late field goal to extend their lead at 37-23. Both teams went back and forth offensively through out the rest of the third quarter as Terrelle bush scored a rushing touchdown for the Express to cut into the Generals lead, however El Paso held a commanding 43-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

San Angelo got a big break on defense when Terrelle Bush intercepted Tommy Jones in the end-zone but San Angelo could not capitalize on offense. El Paso would register two more scores as San Angelo fell just short to the El Paso Generals for a third consecutive time this season by the score of 56-50. Jones finished the game going 14 of 23 for 241 yards passing and seven total touchdowns. The Generals defense played well at crucial points in the ball game as Sam Smith led the way with 12 tackles including 3.5 tackles for loss.

El Paso begins a two-game road trip this weekend with their first stop being in Fort Collins, Colorado to face the Colorado Ice on Saturday, June 13. El Paso Currently has a two game lead over the Abilene Ruff Riders in the Lone Star Division.
