Flint Generals News Release
FLINT, MI - It was a great start to the game for the Flint Generals on Thursday night, but it was the finish and overtime that would get them in the end. Mark Nebus scored with 22 seconds gone by in overtime to lift the Kalamazoo Wings to a 6-5 win over the Generals at Perani Arena and Event Center.
It was the first professional coaching win for Nick Bootland and the Generals second straight loss despite picking up one point to give them five on the season.
The Generals raced out to a 5-3 game through 40 minutes and appeared to have the game under control, but the Wings rallied with two goals in the final 10 minutes of the third period to pull even.
Josef Fojtik scored the first two goals of the game for the Generals. His first was a rocket to open the scoring and the second brought Flint back in front 2-1 via the power play. After Kalamazoo pulled even at 2-2, the Generals retook the advantage when Mike Alexiou's shot wired over top of the shoulder of goaltender Jason Tapp and into the net.
The Generals jumped to a 5-2 lead early in the second period when Jared Dumba scored on a nice feed from Josef Fojtik and then Steve Rymsha followed that up with a goal. Both goals were scored less than 2 minutes apart. Kalamazoo pulled to within two with a goal just past the eight minute mark.
Kyle Deck and Matt Elich each had two assists, while Martin Ondrej, John DiPace, Kris Mallette, Greg Bullock, and Josef Fojtik with single helpers. There were a total of four power plays in the game with each team netting one on the man advantage.
The Generals outshot the Wings 32-31, but Kalamazoo owned a 20-15 advantage over the final 40 minutes.
The Flint Generals return to action tomorrow (Friday) night when they travel to Port Huron to meet the Icehawks at McMorran Place Arena at 7:30 pm. Fans can tune into the game on Unforgettable 1470 WFNT and www.flintgenerals.com, beginning with Generals Countdown to Face-off at 7:10 pm. The voice of the Generals Denis J. Puska has the call at 7:30 pm.
