Generals Defeat First-Place Pump Jacks 6-3

The Victoria Generals traveled to Kilgore, TX on Wednesday night to take on the first-place team in the Texas Collegiate League, the East Texas Pump Jacks. The Generals came away with a 6-3 win behind a great outing by starting pitcher Blake Denman. Denman pitched 6.2 innings on the night, allowing no runs on just three hits while striking out a season high 10 batters.

The Generals got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Trent Wagner singled, stole second base, and came around to score after the Pump Jacks catcher threw a ball away trying to throw out Wagner stealing third.

The Generals broke the game open in the fifth inning by scoring five runs in the frame to take a 6-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Michael McGraw hit a ground ball to the third baseman whose throw to first pulled the first baseman off of the bag which allowed Freddy Villalobos and Ryan Dalton, both of which had singled earlier in the inning, to come around to score. Later in the inning, Wagner drove a double over the centerfielder's head to score McGraw and Chad Kruse. Wagner would then score on an RBI single by Conner Mach.

Denver Diefenbach allowed three runs on three hits while walking two batters in the eighth inning. Phillip Garcia came on in relief and got a big fly out with the bases loaded to get out of a jam.

Garcia came back out in the ninth inning and quickly got two outs. He then allowed back-to-back singles which prompted Generals head coach Ryan Wagner to call on his closer, Covey Morrow, to enter the ballgame. Covey induced a fly ball out to right field to seal his fifth save of the season.

The Generals improved to 12-13 on the season as the Pump Jacks fell to 15-10, but still remain in first place in the TCL standings.

The Generals and Pump Jacks will play game two of the series on Thursday night in Kilgore before returning to Victoria on Friday and Saturday night for two more games against each other.
