El Paso Generals News Release

EL PASO, TX. : The El Paso Generals (7-2) are coming off a big 56-50 win over the San Angelo Stampede Express back on Saturday, June 6, 2009. QB Tommy Jones led the way once again with seven total touchdowns and 256 yards passing. El Paso was able to over-power the Express with their offense and improve to 7-2 overall on the season. Following back-to-back home wins over San Angelo, the Generals now hit the road for two long road games with the first being against the Colorado Ice on Saturday, June 13.

The Ice are coming off a 73-48 win over the Alaska Wild and the big question going into this weekend is the status of QB Justin Holland. Holland suffered an injury on Saturday against the Wild and if he cannot go against El Paso expect Miles Scheer to take over under center. Scheer had a solid performance against Alaska going 12 of 15 for 83 yards passing and two touchdowns. Colorado throws a solid receiving core on the table consisting of Justin Gallas and Josh Gibson. Colorado also brings in a solid running game led by Eugene Reed who is seventh in the IFL in rushing with 343 yards and 10 touchdowns. Bare in mind that Reed replaced original starting RB Terry Washington just a few weeks ago.

As for the Generals defense, LB/DB Sam Smith has developed into a defensive factor every week for El Paso. He will pressure the pocket and help contain the running game and he currently leads the Generals with 58 total tackles this season. His ability to defend the pass is as good as his ability to make tackles. Smith also leads the Generals with five interceptions in 2009. Offensively, the Generals have had one of the best and most consistent offenses in the IFL this season and of course it will all start with Tommy Jones. Jones will have his normal receiving core to throw to in DeAngelo Woodie, Lemans Caismier & Cedrick Johnson. Woodie leads the team with 749 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns, and he is second in the IFL in all-purpose yards.

Colorado will attempt to slow the El Paso passing attack by pressuring Jones and playing pressure defense on the wide outs. LB Ryan Palmer and DL Jason Vincent have been the key pass-rushers this season for the Ice so expect the Generals O-line to be attempting to contain them. This game has all the makings of becoming a shoot-out but the winner will be decided by the turnover battle and likely time of possession. Additionally, the El Paso Generals can wrap up a playoff spot with a win over Colorado. El Paso remains on the road next weekend as the Generals travel to St. Louis to take on the River City Rage.
