Flint Generals News Release
FLINT, MI - John DiPace fired the game winning goal midway through the third period and the defense did the rest as the Flint Generals nipped the Port Huron Icehawks 4-3 at Perani Arena and Event Center on Thursday night. It was the second consecutive home opener win for the Generals which improved their record to 1-2-0-0, while Port Huron fell to 0-3-0-0. The two teams will meet again Friday night at McMorran Place Arena at 7:30 pm.
Outstanding penalty killing was also part of the team's victory tonight as they denied Port Huron any power play goals. The Generals even shutdown the Icehawks 5 on 3 late in the third period that sealed the win. Matt Spezza stopped 34 of 37 shots to notch the win in goal.
The Generals led 3-2 when DiPace's goal on a great dash up the ice made it 4-2. He used Bullock as a decoy and slid the puck through the legs of Larry Sterling. The Icehawks rallied to make it 4-3 but that was a close as they would get.
It was a slow start to the game for the Generals as they trailed 2-0 before the contest was 11 minutes old. Jamie Carroll and Nick Lindberg to the Icehawks on the board beating Matt Spezza who got stronger as the game went along.
However, the second period was dominated by the Generals and they would be rewarded for their hard work. First, Mike Alexiou would score on the power play on a terrific pass from Matt Elich. Justin DePretis notched an assist on the goal. The Generals pulled even when Steve Rymsha completed a 2-0 by firing the puck into the empty net. John DiPace added an assist on the goal. The Generals took the lead prior to the end of the period when Greg Bullock tallied on the power play from John DiPace and Steve Rymsha.
