Klamath Falls Gems News Release
KLAMATH FALLS, OR - The Klamath Falls Gems of the West Coast League today announced that interim Head Coach John Welker will not return for the 2012 season. Welker, pitching coach at College of the Desert (CA), took over the team on July 3 from Brian Embery, the team's original Head Coach. Embery left the team for personal and family reasons and was responsible for recruiting the Gems' original roster.
"We appreciate what John did for the Gems, getting us through a rough first year," Gems General Manager Chuck Heeman said. "John was put in a position he didn't ask for, with players he didn't recruit, and he did an admirable job. He was definitely under consideration to come back next year. However, in watching the successful teams in the West Coast League, I feel we're looking for a different fit.
"We watched Corvallis, Wenatchee, Cowlitz and others come in here during the season. Each played very well as a team, with a plan, a good roster of players and great execution," Heeman said. "After watching their coaching and recruiting strategies, I have a very specific idea of what we need for the Gems to progress. With the help of some people I trust, we should have an announcement very soon. Recruiting for the 2012 season is already under way and we need to get a jump on it."
Heeman has consulted with Oregon Head Coach George Horton, WCL officials including Dan Segel and Ken Wilson, and local ownership to find the next Head Coach of the Gems. The interviewing process has already begun and an announcement is expected within a week.
