Elks Fall to Knights 7-5

August 13, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

Tempers began to flare in Game 2 of the West Division playoffs between the Elks and Knights in a game that saw 20 hits and 5 errors, but the Elks would end up on the wrong end of the scoreboard, falling to the Knights by a score of 7-5.

The Knights got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth as Corey Moore led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a Sac bunt, then Ryan Gorton hit an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Gorton advanced to second on the play, and was followed by an RBI single from Corey Davis to give the Knights a two run lead after 4.

In the bottom of the 5th with one out and the bases loaded, tempers came to a boiling point. Corey Moore hit a groundball to Elks second baseman Derek Blankenship, who flipped it to Ryan Dunn to start the double play. But after receiving the throw from Blankenship, Dunn was taken out by Knights runner Trent Oleszczuk, and that brought both teams out of their respective dugouts as the history between the two teams has hardly been friendly, but both teams were restrained by the umpires before a brawl erupted, but it still was representative of the frustration building between both sides. Both managers and teams were issued warnings.

Then in the bottom of the 6th, the Knights broke it open against Elks reliever Cameron Cuneo, who gave up three consecutive singles and a walk before exiting the game to be replaced by David Wylie. The Knights responded with two more singles off Wylie, pushing four runs across after RBI singles from Cade Gotta and Kramer Scott, giving the Knights a 7-0 lead.

The Elks would respond in the top of the seventh to make it close. After accruing only two hits in the first six innings against Chris Johnson, the Elks Jordan Brower was hit by a pitch, then the Elks ran off 5 consecutive hits, with Grant Moscolo, Dunn, and Blankenship all with RBI singles to chase Johnson from the game. Ben Wetzler came on to get a walk and the first out, then Nick Wagner hit a Sac Fly to score the 5th run of the game for the Elks, cutting the lead to 7-5 and the winning run at the plate when Jordan Brower struck out swinging to end the threat.

The Elks would manage to get two runners on in the top of the 9th, but to no avail as Nick Wagner struck out and Jordan Brower flew out to centerfield to end the game.

The Elks and Knights will play a winner-take-all Game 3 tomorrow night in Corvallis, first pitch at 6:40 for the right to take on the Walla Walla Sweets, who won the series against the Wenatchee Apple Sox 5-4 Saturday. Fans can catch the game at KPOV 106.7, 88.9 FM, or online at KPOV. org
