Klamath Falls Gems News Release

KLAMATH FALLS, OR - The Klamath Falls Gems beat the Bellingham Bells tonight, 4-0, as Gems starting pitcher Mitch Merten (UC Irvine) threw a complete game, three-hit shutout.

Merten took a no-hitter into the fifth, when Bells first baseman Pat Gallagher hit a bloop single into short center field for a clean hit, breaking up Merten's no-hitter and perfect game. By that time the Gems had a 2-0 lead, and as Merten scattered two hits to the Bells, Klamath Falls scored two more to bring the final score to 4-0. Merten finished with five strikeouts and no walks in the complete game victory. He is now 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA for the Gems.

Gems LF Turner Gill (Portland) went 2-for-4 with an RBI, extending his West Coast League-leading hitting streak to 11 games and bringing his batting average to .346. First Baseman Rich Sanguinetti (Nebraska) went 4-for-4 to lead the 11-hit Gems attack.

The Gems go for the sweep of their three-game series against Bellingham on Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. at Historic Kiger Stadium. LHP Bryan Clough (UC Irvine, 0-0, 3.12) goes for the Gems, while Adrian Sampson (Bellevue JC, 2-1, 0.36) goes for Bellingham.

The Gems are members of the West Coast League, a nine-team professional style wood-bat summer college league. The WCL features pro prospects from major conferences across the country.
