Dayton Gems News Release

The AA+ Dayton Gems of the International Hockey League took to the ice tonight for their only in league tune up of the 2009-2010 season. The Gems took an early lead in the game with Mike Vaskivuo scoring 6 minutes and 19 seconds in to the first period. Fort Wayne then responded to close out the first frame on a goal by Vince Lase at 17:08.

The Gems once again started off the scoring in the second period with Edgars Brancis sending a second goal by Komets goaltender Tyler Sims at 1:18. Fort Wayne then responded quickly knotting the score at 2 with a goal from Greg Leffler.

Fort Wayne was the only team to score in the third period tallying goals from Saidachev and Schneider at 13:18 and 14:40.

Dayton's special teams played some tough hockey tonight killing off eight penalties tonight and not allowing Fort Wayne to score at all on the power play. Dayton also did not dress any veterans while the Komets dressed four.

"Al Sims has a lot of work to do with his team before the regular season", Gems President Richard Bruner said.

The Gems return home to Hara Arena to take on the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL Thursday evening at 7:30pm. Fans can get half price tickets for this game at the door and can be admitted free with a canned good which will be donated to a local food bank. Parking is complementary for both home exhibition games and more information on tickets can be obtained by calling Jill in the Gems office at 937-275-7777.

Make sure you get your tickets for opening night Friday, October 16 at 7:30pm at Hara Arena. It will be a rematch of tonight's action as the Fort Wayne Komets come to town to take on your Dayton Gems. For more ticket information or to purchase tickets call Jill at (937) 275-7777.
