Gems Fall to Komets 4-2 Sunday Afternoon

December 11, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release

The Dayton Gems would finish their weekend winless as they fall 4-2 to the Fort Wayne Komets inside the War Memorial Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. Scoring for the Gems were Ben Winnett and Damian Surma.

Fort Wayne would stun the Gems with a fluke goal just 1:11 into the game as the shot bounced out of the catching mitt of starting netminder Bryan Hogan to set an early tone for the hometown Komets. Taking advantage of their early momentum, Fort Wayne would continue to send pucks towards Hogan and would zero in with a shot from the far point to make it a 2-0 game thanks to Fort Wayne native Kaleigh Schrock's lamplighter that somehow found a way past Hogan at 14:05. Continuing to set up in front of the Gems slot, the Komets would take a 3-0 lead with their first powerplay goal of the afternoon courtesy of Fort Wayne's Jamie Milam connecting off a centering pass from the near corner at the 17:47. It would take less than a minute for the Gems to end the Komets scoring run, as Ben Winnett picked up a pass from defenseman Chad Langlais to blast a shot past Fort Wayne goalie Nick Boucher to make it a 3-1 game into the first intermission. Shots on goal favored the Gems 14-11 after twenty minutes of play.

The Gems continued to pressure the Komets on the attacking side of the ice, and would score their second goal of the game at the midway mark of the hockey game as Damian Surma scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season from assists by Jon Ornelas and Lutes to make it a one goal game at the 10:00 mark. Fort Wayne's Brett Smith answered with a Komet goal at the 16:32 mark to extend the home lead and carry the Komets into the second intermission ahead 4-2 on the scoreboard while the Gems led in shots 23-22 after forty minutes.

Both teams would skate through a scoreless third period, despite the Gems late period attempt to inch closer with the extra attacker, with the Komets holding on for the 4-2 final score after a full sixty minutes of play. Shots on goal in the third would favor the Gems 14-9. The Komets finished 1 for 2 on the powerplay while keeping the Gems scoreless on their five man advantage opportunities.

With the loss, the Gems finish the weekend without a win, and see their record fall to 8-9-4.

The Gems return to action with a pair of road games against the Bloomington Blaze on Friday and Saturday nights before returning home to Cassano's Italian Ice inside Hara Arena to host the Blaze on Sunday afternoon at 4pm. Tickets are still available by calling the Gems at 275-7777 or by visiting www.DaytonGems.com.
