Charleston Lowgators News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (February 23) â The North Charleston Lowgators defeated the Columbus Riverdragons 98-82 on Sunday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum. Ime Udoka had 25 points to lead the home team.
The Lowgators took a lead with 3:24 left in the first half and never looked back. Columbus was down by as many as 16 after intermission but did put together a 14-1 run in the third period to cut the deficit to three. That would be as close as they would get, despite getting 28 points from league leading scorer Nate Johnson.
"We knew we had to play tough inside and get aggressive in the paint. They are a very big team but I think we did a nice job on the boards. Our big problem in the first half was finding an answer for Nate Johnson, "said head coach Doug Marty said.
Sedric Webber scored 19 points, Tierre Brown added 17 and Damone Brown recorded 16 to help the Lowgators (22-18) to their fifth straight win.
Columbus coach Jeff Malone said, "I'm pretty disappointed with the effort tonight. We have been soft all year, with very little toughness. You can't let teams run through you. The guys have to come together collectively and toughen up. We'll regroup and win some games."
Tyrone Washington and Greg Stempin had 13 points a piece off the bench to help Johnson with the scoring load for the Dragons (16-22). Tang Hamilton collected his 20th double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lowgators have won eight home games in row, while Columbus dropped their fourth straight. Both teams will battle again on Thursday night in North Charleston at the Coliseum at 7 p.m.
