Gateway Grizzlies News Release
The Gateway Grizzlies Professional Baseball Organization will host a Catch The Spirit promotion slated for June 3, 4 & 5 at GMC Stadium in Sauget, IL. to collect gently used baseball equipment for Dominican Republic girls and boys ages 5 -15 years of age. Fans who donate will receive $1.00 off the cost of a ticket.
Catch The Spirit, a non-profit group formed by members of St. Lucas United Church of Christ in South
St. Louis County is a local pilot program designed to collect baseball equipment and tennis shoes for Latin American children.
During the Grizzlies' three game series against the Mid-Missouri Mavericks, fans can receive $1.00 off the cost of a ticket â for each and every item they donate to Catch The Spirit. Fans are encouraged to bring new and gently used tennis shoes and baseball equipment, including gloves, bats and balls, to GMC Stadium. Members of Catch The Spirit will be on hand to accept the donations. In return, fans will receive discount coupons that can be used at the ticket counter for Grizzlies' games June 3 - 5, 2003.
Retired major league manager, Whitey Herzog, serves as the Honorary Chairman for Catch The Spirit. Plus, former Cardinals pitcher, Joaquin Andujar, will personally help distribute the donated items and conduct free baseball clinics for the children of his native Dominican Republic on June 7-8, 2003.
"At the end of each season, a lot of the Latin players in the Big Leagues collect shoes and equipment from their teammates and bring them home to the young ballplayers," explains Whitey Herzog. "But there's nothing for the little kids."
That's where Catch The Spirit hopes to make a difference. Organizers want to help younger children â boys, girls, athletes and non-athletes, alike, ranging from 5 to 15 years of age.
