Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - The last week began with an almost for the Shreveport-Bossier Captains' Christopher Garcia. The lefty-swinging 22-year-old just missed winning the American Association's home run derby at the All-Star game in Wichita, Kans., on July 27, losing in a "blast-off" to Sioux Falls's Beau Torbert.

Garcia got his revenge by blasting a two-run home run in his first at-bat of the actual game not too long later, en route to a three-hit, four-RBI, MVP-winning performance. He did not stop there, though, with 12 hits and 11 RBIs in his last 22 at-bats since the All-Star Game, and was named the American Association's Batter of the Week as a result by Pointstreak, the league's official statistician.

In the Captains' first game back after the All-Star break, Garcia was 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored, and then went 4-for-4 with two RBIs the next night. In the doubleheader on July 31, Garcia knocked in two runs in a 1-for-3 performance in the opener, and then was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the nightcap.

On Monday at Fair Grounds Field, Garcia knocked in the first run of the Captains' 4-2 win with a first-inning double and scored later in the frame, and later had another hit to finish at 2-for-4 again.

Garcia is the first Captains position player to win a weekly or monthly award this season. He joins pitchers Ryan DiPietro and Osvaldo Rodriguez as players getting weekly honors, while Rodriguez also won June's Pitcher of the Month award.

The Shreveport-Bossier Captains continue their nine-game, 10-day, season-long homestand with game two of a three-game series against the Wichita Wingnuts, at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, August 3. It is Captain Morgan & Maker's Mark Twofer Tuesday, with two-for-one admission to the ballpark and two-for-one Captain Morgan and Maker's Mark drinks throughout the evening. All games are broadcast on ESPN Radio, KRMD-1340 AM as well as streaming live on supertalk1340.com. For information on tickets, promotions, advertising, and other opportunities with the Captains, check out the team's Web site at www.sbcaptains.com, or call the Fair Grounds Field office at (318) 636-5555.
