LOVELAND, CO. - Eagles defenseman Collin Bowman fired home a rebound in the low slot just 1:11 into overtime to give Colorado a 3-2 victory over the Rapid City Rush on Friday. Both Lukas Hafner and Sam Brittain saw time in net in the preseason tilt, as Hafner finished the evening by turning aside 16 of the 18 shots he faced, while Brittain shutdown all 13 Rapid City shots thrown his way.
Eagles forward Jake Marchment started the scoring on the power play when he grabbed a puck in the left corner and skated to the near post, snapping the puck past Rush goalie Storm Phaneuf to put Colorado on top 1-0 at the 2:16 mark of the first period.
Rapid City would respond with a power-play goal of its own midway through the first period when forward Evan Janssen slammed home a back-door pass on the side of the crease to knot the score at 1-1 with 6:28 left in the opening frame. Just over two minutes later, Rapid City defenseman John Rey stepped into a shot from the blue line and lit the lamp to give the Rush their first lead of the game and a 2-1 edge after 20 minutes of play.
Colorado would level the score at 2-2 in the second period when forward Matt Garbowsky snagged a pass from linemate Drayson Bowman inside the right circle and wired the puck past Phaneuf with 7:51 remaining.
After a scoreless third period that saw Colorado put 14 shots on net, the game then moved to a 3-on-3, sudden-death overtime. After Phaneuf denied an early opportunity from between the circles off the tape of defenseman Jake Marto, Bowman would wrist a loose puck into the back of the net to give the Eagles the 3-2 overtime win.
Both teams finished the night going 1-for-4 on the power play, as the Eagles outshot the Rush 37-31. Colorado will travel to Rapid City on Saturday for the preseason finale at 7:05pm mountain time from the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
