Game Preview: Spirit Travel to Niagara IceDogs Thursday Night

St. CATHARINES, Ont. - On Thursday evening, the Saginaw Spirit (27-21-8-0) travel to St. Catharines, Ontario to play the Niagara IceDogs (26-21-6-3) for the second and final time season. The Spirit were victorious in their first meeting of the season at The Dow Event Center on December 3rd by a final count of 3-1.

The Spirit are coming off of a 6-1 loss on Monday afternoon to the Sarnia Sting, while the IceDogs are in a season-long 10-game winless streak.  

The Spirit put 25 shots on goal in the hockey game and broke through in the final minute of the third period when Max Grondin scored on a partial breakaway, slimming the Sarnia lead to 6-1. Unfortunately, that is a close as the Spirit would get. Huntington Woods, Michigan native and Los Angeles Kings prospect Drake Rymsha scored twice, while St. Louis Blues prospect Jordan Kyrou added a goal and an assist for the Sting.

The Spirit are 3-3-4-0 in their last 10 games, but have earned at least one point in seven of those games.

Niagara is coming off of a 4-3 overtime loss to the Peterborough Petes on Monday afternoon in Peterborough. Akil Thomas scored twice for the 'Dogs, while Zach Gallant notched two tallies for the Petes. Former Sarnia Sting Brady Hinz scored the overtime winner for the Petes at 1:48 0f overtime.

The IceDogs last win came on Jan. 27, a 6-2 win over Sudbury.

Tonight is the 34th regular season meeting all-time between the Mississauga / Niagara IceDogs franchise with the Spirit holding a 14-15-1-1 record and a 3-10-1-1 record on the road.
