Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Knighthawks (0-1) look for their first win of the season on Sunday, January 12th at General Motors Place in Vancouver. It is the farthest trip out West for the Knighthawks in their nine-year history.
It's a homecoming of sorts for four Rochester Knighthawks. Curt and Derek Malawsky are from Coquitlam, B.C. and Ted Jenner is from Victoria, B.C. Newest Knighthawk Steve Penny is from Nanaimo, B.C. All four are scheduled to be in the lineup for Sunday's game.
The K-Hawks opened the 2002-03 season with a 13-11 loss to the New Jersey Storm on December 28th, thus ending their National Lacrosse League record 15-game home winning streak. It was Rochester's first loss at home since December 30, 2000. Pat O'Toole and John Grant led the Knighthawks with four points apiece against the Storm. The âHawks defense scored five of the team's 11 goals, led by Andrew Turner's two.
The Vancouver Ravens are 1-0 after defeating the Philadelphia Wings on January 3rd, 14-10. Cam Sedgwick led the Ravens with four goals and three assists. Newly acquired Dan Stroup registered three goals and three assists in his Ravens debut. Stroup was brought over in a deal with the Toronto Rock.
The game is the first regular-season meeting between the two teams. Last season, the Knighthawks defeated the Ravens, 11-10, in overtime in the NLL Quarterfinals on a goal by Coquitlam, B.C., native Derek Malawsky.
Vancouver has all of the components back from last year's team that reeled off seven straight wins to make the playoffs. They have goaltender Dwight Maetche, forwards Chris Gill and Peter Morgan, and defensemen Grant Hamilton and Darren Reisig. They also added Stroup from Toronto and 6-5 Bruce Alexander from Montreal in the 2002 NLL Dispersal Draft.
The game on Sunday will be broadcast on News Talk 950 WROC at 5:00 p.m. The two teams conclude their home-and-home series on Saturday, January 18th at The Blue Cross Arena at 7:35 p.m. The game will be televised live on WB-16 and broadcast on News Talk 950 WROC.
