May 20, 2023 - Canadian Premier League (CPL)
HFX Wanderers FC News Release
The Halifax Wanderers Football Club returns to Canadian Premier League action on Saturday afternoon when they host York United FC at the Wanderers Grounds.
Halifax enters the match after a 2-2 away draw against Cavalry FC to close out a two-match road trip.
Following that draw, Halifax is currently in a tie for 5th place in the league with five points. The Wanderers have drawn all five league matches this season. Three of those matches came by a score of 1-1.
Three players have found the back of the net this season. Zachary Fernandez and Theo Collomb have scored twice, while Massimo Ferrin has one goal in league play.
Today's match is the Football 4 All Match, presented by TELUS.
Football 4 All is the Wanderers' season-long campaign to make soccer more accessible in Nova Scotia. It will highlight opportunities to introduce the sport in local communities and make sure that anyone who wants to play soccer has an opportunity to do so.
TELUS is leading an equipment drive at the stadium where fans are encouraged to bring gently used soccer balls, cleats and shin guards.
Through partnerships with local businesses and the generosity of individual Wanderers supporters, the club is excited to announce that over 600 local children will attend their first Wanderers match on Saturday for free. Over 300 tickets were sponsored, with the club matching every contribution. These donated tickets will be distributed by local organizations, including YMCA Greater Halifax and FUNSports.
York United FC is currently in 8th place in the league standings after a 4-1 loss to Pacific FC.
Following today's match, the Wanderers head back on the road to visit Pacific FC on Saturday, May 27.
Captains:
Andre Rampersad retains the captain's armband for the 2023 campaign. This is Rampersad's fourth season as team captain. Ryan James and Mohamed Omar are the Wanderers' assistant captains.
Coaches:
2023 is the first season with Patrice Gheisar as the Halifax Wanderers' Head Coach. Gheisar was hired in late 2022 after leading Vaughan Azzurri in League1 Ontario to an undefeated season and league championship. Joining Gheisar is assistant coach Jorden Feliciano, who was Gheisar's assistant coach at Vaughan. Jed Davies is another new face in 2023 who is also an assistant coach. Davies' experience in professional football includes stops with USL teams Ottawa Fury and Miami FC, where he served as an assistant coach. Most recently, he served as head of player and coach development for Futuro Academy in Ottawa, ON. Jan-Michael Williams returns as the Wanderers goalkeeper coach.
Wanderers notes and player information links:
The Wanderers enter 2023 with a revamped roster featuring 16 players that were not on the 2022 roster. Defender Riley Ferrzzo and forwards Kosi Nwafornso and Massimo Ferrin joined the team after playing under Gheisar at Vaughan Azzurri. The club has two new goalkeepers entering the season, including 2023 U SPORTS Draft pick Aiden Rushenas (Dalhousie University).
