At a glance...

SAFC v SAFC: San Antonio FC host Sunderland AFC for an international friendly. Sunderland was formed in 1879, becoming one of the most successful clubs in England. Since 1890, the club has spent all but nine seasons in the first division and finishing atop the league six times. The squad is stateside for a preseason tour that will also see New Mexico United and North Carolina FC.

The Black Cats were recently the subject of the hit Netflix documentary Sunderland 'Til I Die. The club was also referenced in Apple TV's widely popular (and fictional) Ted Lasso, with Roy Kent joining the team at age nine.

Summer Heat: After finishing the month of June without a win (0-1-3), SAFC has started July off with three wins, a +7 goal differential and a clean sheet.

Rising up the Table: After three-straight wins, SAFC is tied for first in the USL Championship Western Conference with 34 points. The point total is tied for the second-most in the league, and only Sacramento has a higher goal differential, +19 to +16.

"It's a great opportunity to host such a prestigious club. Great opportunity for our fans to see high level players, high level soccer it's not an opportunity that comes around very often. So we're embracing this opportunity and it's also an opportunity for the players that haven't been getting minutes, an opportunity for them to showcase and compete and show that they belong in the 18 or belong in the starting lineup. So overall, it's just a good opportunity all the way around."

"Obviously it's good to be in the regular season tied for first place in the Western conference. We're not content obviously we want more. Keep building, it's just the makeup of this club, this team with this friendly more or less in the midseason it's a great opportunity again for guys that haven't been getting minutes and going against an extremely high-level opponent. So it's very beneficial and again, a great opportunity for the city of San Antonio to host such a prestigious club so we're excited all the way around."
