Dayton Dutch Lions News Release

WEST CARROLLTON, OH ...The rain cleared and the sun shone as the Dayton Dutch Lions (2-3-1) hosted the LA Galaxy II (5-1-2) on their new turf in their new venue at DOC stadium. The atmosphere was electric with a great crowd and a rapid speed of play from both teams. One goal scored by each team determined the final score.

Both Dayton and LA came out with a blazing pace and the game was exciting from the start, with the ball making its way from end to end and both teams crossing and trying to score. Both keepers came up big when it counted. Ultimately it was LA who was able to take advantage first, when in the forty first minute, a through ball made its way to the feet of Galaxy's Chandler Hoffman who, ending with a one verses one with the keeper, easily put the ball into the back of the net. Dayton was determined to answer, however, and wasted no time getting back in the game. In the forty third minute the Lions were granted a penalty kick when LA's Eder Arreola fouled in the box. Aaron Schoenfeld stepped up to the line and put the equalizer in the bottom left corner. The game went into the half tied.

The second half started with as much energy as the first with both teams wanting a second goal. A tackle from behind in the sixty fifth minute led to a red card being issued to Shintaro Harada leaving the Lions with only ten men. Dayton's keeper Matt Williams was tested consistently by LA, but held his own. Key substitutions were made and the game did not slow down for a minute. Both sides continued to press and shoot for the goal, but it was to remain elusive for both teams for the remainder of the night. The game ended with a tie. Dayton Dutch Lions 1, LA Galaxy 1.

The Dayton Dutch Lions coach Sid van Druenen had this to say about the game. "I think the first twenty five minutes we really played how we want to play. Then we fell into old habits, playing long ball. That is how we conceded the goal but we finished the first half strong, forcing the penalty kick. The second half we became confident but, unfortunately we got the red card. Then it becomes a matter of holding onto the result and trying to get that one lucky goal. We had a couple of good chances. All in all, it's a nice opening of the stadium. It was a good crowd and it was a good result against a tough team. We are happy with the result."

The Dayton Dutch Lions (2-3-2) travel to play the Harrisburg City Islanders (1-4-1), Saturday, May 17 at 2pm. They return home to DOC stadium in West Carrollton to take on the Sacramento Republic (3-3-1) Sunday, May 25th at 7pm. They remain at their home stadium in West Carrollton to play the Rochester Rhinos (2-1-3) at 7pm on Sunday, June 1st. For season and individual game tickets, visit the Dutch Lions website.
