Game Day with Gatineau

March 11, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

The MAINEiacs and Olympiques have clashed twice thus far this season, with both sides winning once back at Centre Robert Guertin in October. Gatineau won 4-3 in the weekend opener, as Jean-Gabriel Pageau broke a 3-3 tie with a power play goal at the 8:46 mark of the third period. One day later, Lewiston exacted revenge, erasing a 1-0 deficit for a 2-1 comeback win on a goal by Pierre-Olivier Morin at the 2:01 mark of the third period. Nicholas Champion and Maxime Clermont were the netminders for both contests.

Two Teams Heating Up

Both teams enter tonight's game coming off strong performances a week ago. The MAINEiacs earned five out of six possible points on the road last weekend against Halifax and PEI, while the Olympiques picked up three comeback wins last week, knocking off Victoriaville, Rouyn-Noranda, and Val-d'Or. Lewiston has snagged at least one point in four straight games, while Gatineau is currently riding a five-game winning streak.

A Pair of Snipers

For the first time since December, the top two goal scorers in the QMJHL will take the ice against one another. Lewiston's Etienne Brodeur has been in the lead for most of the season, as he enters this weekend with a franchise record 49 goals. On the other side of the ice, Gatineau's Philip-Michael Devos leads the league in points (107), but enters the weekend with 45 goals, putting him four behind Brodeur.

The Playoff Race

Lewiston and Gatineau are both fighting for playoff positioning with just four games remaining on each of their respective schedules. The MAINEiacs are currently in eighth place overall, trailing Shawinigan by one point. Meanwhile, the Olympiques are currently in fifth place overall, leading Acadie-Bathurst by two points. Lewiston and Gatineau are currently separated by six points.

Head-to-Head

Tonight marks the 23rd all-time meeting between the MAINEiacs and Olympiques, as well as the third this season. Gatineau has been a challenging opponent, as they have won 13 of the previous meetings, while Lewiston has won eight, with one tie mixed in. Ten of the 22 games have taken place at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, where the Olympiques have won six times to the MAINEiacs four. Both clubs have won once in this year's season series.

Who to Watch for

During the winter trade period, the Olympiques made a big splash, acquiring the league's leading scorer in Philip-Michael Devos. The 20-year old has 34 points in 23 games since joining Gatineau, running his season total to 107 points in 64 games. Jean-Gabriel Pageau has been a consistent performer this season with 72 points in 64 games, while injuries have limited Tye McGinn to 56 points in 39 games. Maxime Clermont has been the Olympiques' backbone in goal, earning 27 wins in 47 appearances.

THE CHASE FOR 50

Etienne Brodeur is on the verge of a milestone that has never been achieved by a Lewiston MAINEiac. The 19-year old has already broken the franchise record for the most goals in a single season, and now, he sits just one goal shy of 50 for the year.

Because of this, Lewy's Legion is inviting all those in attendance this weekend to bring signs with the letter "E", as well as the number "50". Then, when Etienne scores his 50th goal of the season, everyone can hold up their signs, recognizing this great accomplishment.

THE HUNT IS ON!
