Game Day Preview

August 10, 2003 - Women's Professional Football League (WPFL)
Arizona Caliente News Release

The Arizona Caliente will kickoff their 3rd Season on Saturday, August 9th on the road against the LA Amazons. The Amazons (1-0) opened their season on August 2nd, 2003 with a victory 8-7 over the SoCal Scorpions. Game time is 7:00pm, at Citrus College in Glendora, CA.

2003 Team Outlook

The Caliente has rostered a team of veteran All-Stars combined with rookie talent that with heart & determination is poised for the WPFL Championship.

The Break Down: What do you do when you have THREE All-Star Quarterbacks (#8 Marcus -WAFC 2002, with the CA Quake, #10 Corbett - WAFL 2001-2002, #16 Saad - WAFC 2002)? The answer is move one of them to starting Middle Line Backer (#10 Corbett). Defensively with Corbett side by side with MLB and 2 time All-Star (WAFL 2001-2002 and WAFC 2002) #65 Darnell, the Caliente all but dare the opposing team to come down the middle. Of course if they decide to try the outside they face an arsenal of veterans with Corner #24 Meservy (WAFL 2001-2002 and WAFC 2002 All-Star) , OLB's #19 Barry and #9 Murphree (both WAFC 2002 All-Star's) , and Safety #5 Witcher. The Defensive Line, which remains a strength of the team, is anchored by #92 Hoke also a 2 time All-Star (WAFL 2001-2002 and WAFC 2002) .

Offensively Saad & Marcus are on course both bringing talent and experience to the quarterback spot, supported by veteran Center #79 Gamble & Guard #61 Arnold, both which earned WAFC 2002 All-Star credits. The combined attack by ground or by air will be led by Running Backs #28 Latta (WAFC 2002 All-Star) and #14 Reyes (WAFL 2001-2002 and WAFC 2002 All-Star), and returning WAFC 2002 All-Star WRs #22 Lewis and #47 Jarabek. The Caliente's triple threat however comes when Lewis isn't catching the TD pass. Indisputably one of the best kickers in women's football, Lewis boosts an impressive kicking record going 26 for 32 last season.

Who To Watch

Keep an eye on #41 Drago & #1 Richards. Drago (LB), a second year Caliente player, had a minor injury at the beginning of last season that forced her to sit out a few games, and continued to plague her throughout, but this season she has propelled to the forefront of the defense and is sure to make an impact. Richards (DE), a Caliente rookie who picked up experience playing with the AZ Titans during the AFWL 2002 season, makes her presence on the field felt being both a smart football player and physical gifted athlete. Look for both of these players to play a huge part of the Caliente defense.
