Game Day Preview: Roughnecks at Amarillo Venom

April 22, 2011 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
West Texas Roughnecks News Release

MIDLAND, TX. : Following a 39-16 home win over the Omaha Beef back on Saturday, April 16 the West Texas Roughnecks (5-2) return to the road for a Lone Star Divisional match-up with the Amarillo Venom (0-7) on Saturday, April 23. It will be the second of three meetings between both teams of the 2011 regular season as the Roughnecks currently lead the series 1-0 following a 37-34 win over Amarillo back on March 25 at the Ector County Coliseum.

The Roughnecks defensive unit is coming off a solid performance against the Omaha Beef, allowing 16 total points and posting three interceptions with one safety. Defensive linemen Ronnie Mason recorded two sacks and an interception in the win as both Marrio Norman and Clarence Wright also came away with key interceptions. In their previous match-up with Amarillo, the Roughnecks defense picked up two sacks and recorded three interceptions in the winning effort. The Roughnecks secondary will be tested by a strong Venom receiving core featuring former Roughnecks wide out Steve Bergeski who posted six receptions for 62 yards & one touchdown last week versus Wichita. Look for Venom WR DuVaughn Flagler to also be a key factor in the Amarillo passing game on Saturday, however the Venom will face a Roughnecks defense that currently ranks first in the IFL in average yards allowed per game (155.1).

Offensively, the Roughnecks had better production in their recent win over the Omaha Beef as Arkelon Hall threw for two touchdown passes, both to WR Wilson Kimble, and running back Evin Jones posted two rushing touchdowns including 37 yards on the ground. Look for the Roughnecks to continue using the dual-combination running game with Jones and DeWayne Hogan as both combined for 52 yards rushing and three total touchdowns in the win over Amarillo back on March 25. Roughnecks wide receiver Josh Floyd will be an important factor for Arkelon Hall in the passing game as he currently ranks second in the IFL in all-purpose yards (808) and he posted eight receptions for 66 yards with one touchdown in the first meeting with the Venom. Expect Floyd as well as Venom DB Cashmin Thomas to be the key factors in terms of special teams & kick returns for both sides on Saturday.

Look for the turnover battle to be another essential factor towards this divisional match-up as this is the first time the Roughnecks return to Amarillo since both teams met in the first round of the IFL Playoffs in 2010.
