Game Day Preview: Roughnecks at Allen Wranglers
February 27, 2011 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
West Texas Roughnecks News Release
MIDLAND, TX. : The West Texas Roughnecks hit the road for the first time in 2011 in Week Two as they face the Allen Wranglers on Monday, February 28 from the Allen Event Center. The Roughnecks face a second consecutive divisional opponent in the Wranglers following a Week One win over the Bricktown Brawlers, 39-22. The Roughnecks defense was impressive throughout the course of the game by shutting out the Brawlers in two quarters, forcing three turnovers, and recording six sacks. The defensive line will be the important starting point in this match-up as Jermaine Blakely, Ronnie Mason, and Jeramie Richardson will be key components in providing pressure up front in the pocket. The secondary, consisting of Anthony Beck, Derrick Boyd, and Clarence Wright will be key in terms of open-field tackling and containing the passing game. Additionally, former New Mexico LB Tray Hardaway is active this week for the Roughnecks defensive unit.
The Roughnecks offense started slow in the Week One win over the Brawlers but the running game was productive inside the red-zone in the first half as the passing game developed in the second-half. A few questions remain at quarterback as Carlton Jackson left the Brawlers match-up early with a concussion, but Jackson has been participating in practice this past week. Arkelon Hall filled in nicely for the Roughnecks in Week One finishing 6 of 13 for 69 yards and two touchdowns, and he could see playing time against the Wranglers. Running backs Evin Jones and DeWayne Hogan combined for four touchdowns in Week One and once again they will be key for the Roughnecks in the red-zone and throughout the second half. In terms of the passing game, look for Josh Floyd and Wilson Kimble to be key factors in that department as well as Tim Bush, who will be active for Monday's game.
The Allen Wranglers enter their first season as a member of the Indoor Football League after the organization made the move from Arkansas to Allen over the off-season. The Wranglers are coming off a 26-25 preseason win over the Amarillo Venom and they will be led on offense by quarterback Kewon Dewberry, a player that the Roughnecks faced previously as a member of the Abilene Ruff Riders back in 2010. The Wranglers have a competitive defense which features defensive backs Joey Longoria and Nick Fellows. Look for former San Angelo wide out Bobby Chase to be an important factor in the Wranglers passing attack as Dedrick Poole will be the featured player at running back for the Wranglers. The match-up at defense between both clubs will be a key factor in this game, as well as the progression of both offensive units in the second-half.
